Full Circle at Kimball: Reflection on Training & Growth

by Tila Nguyen | IIDA | Designer

They say life has a funny way of coming full circle. My first visit to Kimball International in Jasper, Indiana, was back in 2008 or 2009 when I was a college student on a tour. Fast forward, and I just returned to the very same place—but this time as a professional attending dealer designer training. Walking through those familiar, now-renovated doors brought back a flood of memories and a real sense of how far I’ve come.

From the moment you arrive at Kimball HQ, the small-town hospitality greets you in the best way. You’re welcomed with warm smiles, fresh coffee, and an epic snack tray. In the entryway sits a piece of history: the very last piano Kimball ever produced, signed by every individual who helped build it. Though the ink has faded, the legacy remains timeless.

The training focused heavily on Kimball’s systems and ancillary product lines, along with some exciting new product introductions. After our first couple sips of coffee, we opened our laptops. Mary Kate Downey, whom many of us had only seen in webinars, led the sessions. Spotting her in person felt a little like meeting a celebrity… just one who happens to be an expert in commercial furniture.

We trained on lounge pieces, desking, and panel systems, then explored their working showroom to see how everything connects and functions in a real-world environment. We also toured Kimball’s testing facility and seating factory, gaining a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, durability standards, and engineering behind the products we specify every day. The trainers shared tips and tricks for field installation and even led a hands-on session where we built part of a Narrate panel workstation. Understanding how connector posts, frames, tiles, and electrical components fit together is essential to becoming a better designer and specifier.

Another highlight was the newly renovated healthcare and education showroom, which beautifully showcased treatment and learning environments in thoughtfully designed vignettes. It’s clear Kimball is serious about creating spaces that support both well-being and innovation.

And of course, no trip to Jasper is complete without dinner at the famous Schnitzelbank Restaurant. Yes, we enjoyed “The Bratzel” and schnitzel. Yes, we even practiced the Schnitzelbank song and sang it loud and proud in front of the entire restaurant. (Pro tip: don’t skip the apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream.)

As I packed up to head home, I couldn’t help but reflect on how one small town and one company can leave such a lasting impression.

Hey Kimball, let’s not wait another 17 years to do this again, okay?
