Designers’ Camera Roll: Travel Inspiration

by Liz Tung | EDAC | Art Associate, Marketing Coordinator

Inspiration is everywhere, especially for designers. If you’ve ever traveled with one, you’ll notice we can’t resist snapping photos of seemingly random things—textures on walls, intricate tile patterns, or even the way light hits the surface. We are not afraid to publicly flip over furniture to examine the craftsmanship or find the manufacturer. This blog captures those travel moments where everyday sights spark extraordinary design ideas.

Florida Sunset

The unique reflection of the cotton candy sunset over the canal in Cape Coral, FL was unreal. The energizing colors of the sky grounded by the palm trees and shoreline in shadow would be a dynamic palette for an amenity space or custom art piece. The experience of this sunset reminds us that a “nature-inspired” palette doesn’t have to be neutral, it can be bright and colorful too.

Door Detail

Quiet streets and seemingly insignificant moments can still cause pause and grab attention. One portion of this building did just that for me. The contrast of a bold pink wall against a rich wood door and playful green trim were instant color inspiration. Upon a closer look, the door’s hardware became another lively element that transformed to a focal point, instead of solely serving its function in a utilitarian way. The foliage was one more layer that helped create what could easily be an insignificant area, picture-worthy!

Never leave a surface untreated! The Admont Abbey Library in Austria is a harmonious mix of function and beauty. First and foremost, this space is a working library. However, this function does not stop the design from shining. From floor to ceiling, every inch has been addressed. Hidden staircases, decorative railings, and trimmed signage serve their purpose while integrating into the design seamlessly. Patterned flooring, bronze sculptures, and frescos are jaw dropping decorative elements, that only enhance the star of the show – the books!

 Paris Cafe

I traveled all the way to Paris, only to return with photos of pillow designs, chair arrangements, and booth construction. The charm of Parisian bistros is in their seamless blend of indoor comfort with the outdoor ambiance—every detail capturing the essence of effortless style and inviting warmth. Très bien!

St. Stephen's Cathedral-Vienna, Austria

The bold roof tile pattern of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, immediately caught my eye. The mix of colors and patterns would make an incredible feature wall or backsplash, adding energy to any space. The roof’s vibrant contrast against the Gothic architecture is timeless and inspiring.

The power of one color! This brightly colored monochromatic patio, surrounded by lush greenery, proves how a single hue can make a bold and harmonious statement, creating a vibrant oasis!

I find inspiration in my garden. I love seeing the butterflies and bees every day when I get home and walk down the driveway. Watching them always brings me a sense of calm.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas – I love how the sidewalk is painted and the design carries up the stairs. The kids had a blast interacting with the street art—bonus points for tiring them out!

What began as a journey to collaborate with our design colleagues at SLDM quickly evolved into an inspiring exploration of Santa Fe’s unique tapestry designs and culture. These captivating patterns, rich textures, and vibrant color palettes left me energized and creatively inspired!

Sante Fe, NM – Look at all the texture and layering!  Rough Stucco wall, Ornate metal gate, Hand-crafted / Artisan peppers, Colorful Handmade silk flowers, and that adorable wood-carved bird.  It’s the perfect balance.  We can all use more color in our lives, and this little corner shop in downtown Santa Fe is such an inspiration.

Middle America, MO – My family farm.  Meet The Amazing and Loving Wonky Donkey.  He is such a delight and is ALWAYS smiling for us.  His smile and personality brighten our lives. His velvet-soft nose reminds me of some of the lovely fabrics we use on our project, but his nose is better than any fabric out there.

Elephant Rock State Park – Belleview, MO – Sometimes, the world’s weight feels like it’s on your shoulders and about to crush your buddy.  Don’t give up on yourself or others. Stay strong, help a friend, help a stranger, help all.  We are all in it together.  You got this!
